Description

32mo (138mm x 104mm) 81pp. Hardcover in tan paper boards with crescent shaped illustration by Potter inlaid on front board with white printing of title also on the spine in good condition but with no d/w.and there is appropriate scuffing and abrasions on spine and edges as befits its regular use and age. Also, inlaid first two letters of title have been over- traced lightly in pencil as has the upper half of the second “The”, presumably by a young child, protected in clear archival covering, Text is in very good condition with all twenty illustrations present and in good order and it is devoid of all prior owner markings o/t a handwritten 2/- annotation in pencil on corner of ffep (original price was 1/- on d/w). The pretty 1908 endpapers are in pristine condition. Some minor hinge weakening is present with stitching slightly evident between pges 18-19 and 42-43., but spine is still sound however. This is likely to be the 4th impression as the first three printings of the first edition had the date included on the title page whereas this book only has the year 1909 on a copyright page on verso of title page. It is the sequel to the Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny tales as Peter’s sister Flopsy is married to Benjamin and they have six children now ie. the Flopsy bunnies. Potter loved interesting words, using “soporific ” on the first page of narrative but explaining it for the benefit of young readers as well. The very earliest Ist impression has a noticeboard drawn on p.14 but it was removed after that, due to difficulties in translation as Warne began to eye the overseas market. Ref. Linder ” A History Of The Writings Of Beatrix Potter ” p 195 and p. 428. Certainly an overall good and intact copy of a very early printing.
