Description

32mo (137mm x 105mm) 85pp. Hardcover in dark green paper boards with a domed inlaid illustration from Potter adhered to the front board with a white title on spine as well as the front board in very good condition though with no d/w, protected in clear archival covering, text is also in very good condition with excellent endpapers and all 24 colour illustrations present in perfect condition. Some hinge weakening present with stitching visible between pges 30-31 and pges 78-79, though the spine is still sound and it is devoid of any prior ownership markings as well. With her parents ageing significantly and Hilltop Farm keeping her increasingly busy, Potter realised she could no longer produce two books per year and Tiptoes was the only one witten ths year. Also at this time in 1911, it had become evident that a very large number of Potter’s young readers were in fact in Northern America so this is the only book of hers actually set in North America with a recognizable chipmunk and grey squirrels and even a North American bear as well, noting that an anusual error occurs as she uses noisy birds called Yellowhammers that are only found in Europe not USA. The dedication to “Many Unknown Little Friends, Including Monica” is pure Beatrix Potter as Monica was only a schoolfriend of a little cousin of hers , never known to Potter but she did like the sound of the name nevertheless. The date of publication is on the title page and the first two printings of the First Edition are indistinguishable, so this book in overall very good and tight condition is at least a second printing or earlier with the third printing done in 1912.. See Linder p.208 and 429.
