This farewell volume of Hornblower contains the uncompleted last Hornblower novel thus being the eleventh book of the series but is chronologically the fourth and the two short stories hitherto unpublished in book form. The novel breaks off at a natural narrative climax and is as well executed as any of the novels preceding it, as the author died before he could finish it. Set six months before the Battle of Trafalgar an addendum to the book then describes the planned plot and outcome gleaned posthumously from Forester’s notes.
