Description

18mo, 192pp. Hardcover, original boards,in fair condition with wearing but still attached hinges, showing its considerable age though with a front board embossed in black on grey cloth that is only minimally scuffed and abraided, the rear board is also well worn but clearly legible, text is in fair condition, with no missing pages or tears on light frail paper that of course is now age-tanned and a prior owner has ornately inscribed his name on both the half-title and title page in 1888. Interestingly also adorned with literary advertisements on the endpapers and rear board as well. This book is essentially a a poem published by Pope almost 400 years ago and it is an effort to rationalize or rather “vindicate the ways of God to man”, a variation of Milton’s opening lines in Paradise Lost, being thus concerned with the natural order God has decreed for man. It popularised “optimistic philosophy” throughout Europe and England.. Written in heroic couplets, it comprises four epistles and was originally published anonymously .
