Mikhail Sholokhov

$3,100.00

Condition: 8vo, 755pp. Hardcover in dark grey cloth boards with corner and spine edge bruising, though the slightly shaken spine remains very firm with no lean, plus there is only very slight edge toning with no flecking or foxing and a classic original black and red unclipped d/w with a Cossack profile that is showing some wear with a closed tear to upper left corner and spine plus edge chipping and minor age age yellowing, now needing a d/w backing paper and is also protected in clear archival covering, for a well loved first impression the text is clean, undamaged and unmarked.

Description

A very scarce as a first edition and impression from April 1934, the wonderful patina of age is very obvious as the novel in four volumes traces the lives and struggles of the Cossacks of the Don River Valley during the First World War, the Russian Revolution and the terrible Russian Civil War for the White armies against the Red Bolsheviks.
Originally published in a Soviet magazine in 1928-1932 and then in 1940.
This is regarded as a major epic of Soviet literature and is one of the very first works of Soviet literature to be translated into English.
A great example of a true classic that is arguably one of the most significant works of the 20th century.
