Description
8vo, IX, 96pp. Hardcover with the less common red cloth (not green) covered boards and gilt title on front board with a gilt spine, in overall good condition with shelf wear on all edges and spine and lightly soiled board edges as well, with a sound spine showing an excellent example of 19th Century stitch binding by the Chiswick Press. Book now protected by clear archival covering, text in excellent condition on lightly tanned paper, devoid of extraneous prior owner markings other than a plain bookplate in red script of ‘Ex Libris John Fuller’ adhered to front pastedown and a small hinged paper tag “from The Author” on the ffep opposite plus a tiny 1cm sticker from ‘Cooks Books’ in England adhered to bottom of the rear pastedown. Somewhat difficult to date, with 1881 also in Roman numerals in gilt on front board, under ‘Walker’s Art Of Dining Edited By Felix Summerly’ in gilt as well. The preface written by Summerly about Walker says he died in Brussels in 1836, fifty-five years prior to this edition, with aspects of his gastronomic philosophy being translated and published even back in 1825. An interesting and quite rare book (particularly in its red cloth) for food historians.
