Description

Sq 8vo, 199pp. Softcover, in very good condition, with very slight bruising of corners text in very good condition though with a neat gift inscription in red pen on title page. An ideal and accessible sketch book about Broome fifty to a hundred years ago, describing a town where diverse cultures mingled daily with only gambling and religious and secular festivals for diversion in a very harsh and isolated environment. The book has countless historical b/w photos throughout as well as more recent coloured plates of Broome and its surroundings. Justifiable recipient of the W.A. Premier’s Book Award in 2003, the author has looked at the heart of Broome exploring the lives of the thousands of Asian, Aboriginal and mixed-race men and women in “the corrugated-iron world beyond the lattice” thereby stepping away froim the privileged, private and powerful world of the Broome pearler.
