Description

8vo, XII, 272pp. Hardcover with no d/w, in good condition with crimson cloth boards blocked in gilt and beautifully printed in green and lighter crimson on the excellent front board and light affected spine with minor shelf wear only, t.e.g. and light tanning on other edges, very minor water damage on near edge corner of rear board and slight early cracking on rear hinge and minor weakness of an otherwise very sound spine. Missing ffep and has a neat signature of prior collector from 1940 on first title page, all 77 plates and annotated tissue guards are in immaculate condition with surprisingly nearly no foxing throughout so text is overall in very good condition with the rear map unblemished. Another first edition of one of the delightful 20/- Colour Books by A & C Black with the magnificent artworks done by Thomas Mower Martin an English-born Canadian landscape painter often called “the father of Canadian art”. The narrative is by a famous Canadian poet William Wilfred Campbell. Possibly these books were done as competition to the famous Baedecker guide books so it is not attempting to give a Canadian history but is really describing the great natural features of the land. A delightful book, rare in Australia (Inman Catalogue No. 12)
