Description

8vo, XXVI, 177pp. Hardcover with pictorial yellow non price-clipped d/w (drawn by Norman Lindsay) in good condition though slightly shelf-worn and with light edge flecking present, now protected by clear archival covering, text in very good condition including b/w photographic illustrations and attractive brown map endpapers intact and devoid of all extraneous prior owner markings. Clune has investigated in detail the legend of the infamous Bully Hayes, thereby presenting an interpretation that debunks much of his serious villainy but still retains great detail of the historic practice of “blackbirding”as well as including detail of cannibals, naval captains and missionary martyrs that were all part of the violence of the paradisal beauty of the South Seas islands in the nineteenth century. An engrossing read.
