4to, 312pp. Hardcover in olive green cloth covered boards in very good condition with minor shelf wear only and pictorial d/w in excellent condition protected by clear archival covering. Spine is still very sound but now becoming soft with frequent referencing, text is in a very good state with only mild yellowing of all page edges and slight foxing of front and rear endpapers plus a neat handwritten prior owner name at top right of ffep. The Times Literary Supplement says this is “the most remarkable autobiographical work any artist, scientist or man of letters of his generation has written.”. The book describes how his art becomes inextricably involved with life and there are no less than 434 annotated illustrations (60 in colour) throughout.
