Description

8vo, XIV, 246pp. Hardcover in good condition with no d/w with light blue-green cloth boards with elaborate gold embossed detail and title on front board and black printing on the spine with appropriate shelf wear and early weakening of the spine at both front and rear edges and other internal areas, text is in good condition overall with a gift inscription from Xmas 1921 written on verso of the frontispiece and a prior owner’s name inscribed on the ffep. All 75 of the extraordinary colour plates and the descriptive tissue guards are present and undamaged. This volume of one of the earliest of the A & C Black 20/- Colour Books (Inman Bibliography no. 19) was very popular requiring five different impressions within ten years with the artist and author living and travelling widely within Egypt and Burma including prolonged periods with the Bedouin tribes showing great respect and empathy for local peoples and culture. Despite its lack of rarity, it is scarce in Australia and Talbot Kelly’s paintings are quite extraordinary with their myriad of beautiful scenes.
