8vo, IX, 211pp. Hardcover with crimson boards and gold embossed title on front and slightly faded but totally sound spine in excellent condition with only minor shelf wear, t.e.g. and minor edge flecking, no d/w; text in very good condition with appropriately lightly age tanned pages throughout plus a heavily tanned half title page, all 20 painted illustrations and annotated tissue guards are in perfect condition and a prior owner’s signature from 1909 and a prior collector’s name from 1940 adorn the ffep. One of the many A & C Black 20/- Colour Books printed from 1901 to 1921, this edition has quite a limited frame of interest obviously primarily relevant to the legal profession which may explain its excellent condition after over 110 years since publication, clearly rarely opened and this first edition is very scarce worldwide yet it has been reprinted at least four times in the last 20 years. The paintings by noted English landscape artist Gordon Home are truly beautiful as are all illustrations for these books and this very sound rare copy is a delight for a collector.
