Description
8vo, 266pp. Hard cover in bright silver lettered magenta half cloth over matt buff boards, with a tight, sound spine with unclipped original pictorial d/w featuring sepia photo to upper and Miller’s portrait photo to rear both in a genuinely near fine condition, with clean crisp corners and edges, now protected in clear archival covering, text is likewise in excellent condition devoid of any inscriptions or marks of any kind. Published posthumously, (he died in California in 1980), it is set in a rapidly changing New York City of the early 1920’s and is often both brutal and shocking as well as occasionally awkward and rambling. Probably marking his first steps to a theme and motif that was to become his hallmark ie. the scathingly direct hero striving for an unflinchingly honest view of himself in a world created out of the writer’s life. He had already become a liberating influence in mid 20th -century literature. Rare in Australia.
