Description
8vo, XI, 226pp + H. and S. advertising at rear over 15pp. Hardcover in slightly rubbed red publisher’s cloth with an embossed title and hunting scene in black and blue on front board and gilt to spine in good condition with some spine fading and bruised corners and spine edges, with no d/w as published, text is clean and unmarked in overall good condition however internally, the condition is slightly marred by some loose pages and illustrations together with hinge cracking after the front pastedown and at other positions such as pges 176-177and pges 96-97 plus the ffep has been inexplicably torn out. Hence the spine is still sound but is relatively soft nonetheless. It has sixty-one illustrations with forty-six wonderful photographs by the author and a compatriot with three detailed maps as well with a protected photo frontis. Hence, this well loved book from early last century iis still in good or better condition overall with pages left untrimmed on lower and fore-edges as well Based on Churchill’s travels around British East Africa in 1907, this is the first book “deriving purely from his journalism rather than from his war correspondent work.” The book was initially serialized in the Strand Magazine prior to publication in this attractive book-form. He had a highly lucrative contract based on his status as a rising star of British politics. Somewhat surprisingly, this early travelogue is extremely readable and “bubbles with Churchill’s irrepressable interest in everything new, whether it was the thrill of hunting rhino, the dangers of sleeping sickness, or the engagingly extempore justice of the District Officers” (Woods. p. 81).
