8vo, XII, 235pp. Hardcover with no d/w, in very good condition with maroon cloth and front board beautifully embossed in orange, green, red and gold, totally unaffected by light exposure with a very sound spine likewise decorated but lightly faded and minor shelf wear present to corners and edges, text also in very good condition with no ex-library markings, appropriate minor age foxing on lower and fore-edges with gilt upper edge, a prior owner’s signature from 1935 on ffep and all eighty magnificent illustrations present with their captioned tissue guards in excellent condition. One of the famous A & C Black 20/- Colour books published between 1901 and 1921 reputedly in competition to the Baedeker Guides and apparently this is a rarer title with only 2000 copies printed (normally 3000 for other titles) and is number 58 in the Inman Collector’s Guide. This is a beautiful example of a bygone era of travel being written and illustrated by this famous married couple during their long languid summer round the Bay of Naples in 1904.
