8vo, XII 235pp. Hardcover in a grey slipcase internally lined in excellent condition, boards in beautiful grey green paper with repetitive fern motifs and a grey cloth spine that is a faded from light exposure but with still clear gold printing. Very minor corner bruising only with top edge pale crimson and the beautiful decorated pink endpapers are intact and unmarked bearing white illustrations of Jane and her home Chawton Cottage. text is in pristine condition with no foxing and only a tiny area of flecking on one edge and devoid of all internal markings. Overall a near fine copy only diminished by the spine fading. Persuasion was Austen’s last novel not published till six months post her death together with Northanger Abbey in 1817. It is accepted as her most maturely written novel, showing refined literary technique and conception now appropriate for a novelist approaching forty years of age. It has been the subject of several adaptations in film, theatre and radio broadcasts. In this format with woodcutt illustrations it is a beautiful gift for any Austen devotee or indeed anyone wishing to explore the works of this great novelist being one of seven early Folio Editions published in their own slipcases circa 1960.
