Roy 8vo, XX1, 223pp. Hardcover in slightly marked cream vellum with a gilt title on front and spine also of vellum in very good and sound condition with t.e.g and rough-cut pages on other edges and no d/w as published, housed in a wood backed cream and brown slip-case in excellent order that is clearly not the original easily damaged slip-case being a better more elegant option nevertheless, text is from the 1676 fifth edition and is in very good condition also with Rackham illustrated brown endpapers and is signed by the illustrator in black ink, being number 190 of 775 copies, plus there is a neat small private prior owner dedication from Xmas 1933 in black ink on verso of ffep. Frontis. plus eleven colour illustrations are in an excellent unmarked state, each with its own annotated tissue-guard. There is also light browning of both bottom and fore-edges with minor tanning and light spotting on various pages throughout that is appropriate for the coarse paper stock utilised after nearly 90 years of age. But overall this signed deluxe limited edition in slipcase remains really near-fine with wonderful patina of age too. Being probably the world’s most famous fishing book, this copy is produced duplicating an 1897 edition from John Lane, the Bodley Head Ltd edited by Richard Le Gallienne and the 1676 text is the last to be revised by Walton, now with modernised spelling. However the focus interest is clearly the magnificent bold colour illustrations by Arthur Rackham from the Golden Age of Illustrators in 1895-1920. Being one of the most sought after “Rackhams”, an edition of this quality rarely comes onto the international market and is from the famous Dorros family private estate in Chicago via Hindman Auctions in November 2023.
