8vo, 117pp White cloth hardcover with black binding over a firm spine with silver title on spine and a black pen portrait of the old man on the front board plus a non price-clipped (12/-) d/w with a pen drawing of a giant fish and the man in his boat with a light green spine that is light faded and chipped top and bottom with a small tear on the upper rear of the spine. Both are in very good condition and the front flap includes the announcement of Hemingway’s Nobel Prize from November 1954 with a decorative red border. There is a small brown coffee stain 2cms in length on the lower right of the front of the d/w plus very minor general soiling on the d/w too. the text and all illustrations are in excellent condition with subtle tanning of all pages, allowing the book to be classified as overall excellent. The illustrations in this special edition comprise drawings by two artists with different interpretations of the story and the appropriate pages for either Tunnicliffe or Sheppard are declared on page 5 as well as a dedication to Charlie Scribner who published the first editions in the US of most of Hemingway’s books. This is a most beautiful copy of this famous book with such exquisite drawings throughout including the front and rear endpapers.The Swedish Academy awarded his 1954 prize for literature “‘for his mastery in the art of modern narration as most lately revealed in this novel.”
