Description
8vo, XXVII, 300pp. Hardcover in publisher’s pale green cloth with lightly embossed title and illustrations in green on front cover and spine. Significant shelfwear present with scuffing of all board-edges and top and bottom of the faded spine with all three edges well tanned. Spine is still surprisingly sound though one of the illustrated glossy pages at pge.296 has neatly detached but is still present in good order plus colour illustrated frontis and six other illustrations in colour from 1911 are in place with attractive endpapers that have a hand written name and 1943 date in pencil in top right corner. Remarkably little foxing on WWII paper stock, so overall the book is still in fair/good condition though missing the d/w however. Easy to forget that this edition was printed in Surrey and published in London at the height of WWII with the outcome still in the balance though the Blitz was underway. A beloved children’s classic with delightful artwork by Charles Robinson, it is a collector’s item not really suitable for the rough and tumble of a young child at present. Despite multiple reprintings , it is still quite rare in this form.
