Description

large 8vo, Vol I – 608pp, Vol 2- 775pp, Vol 3 – 988pp, Vol 4- 967pp, Vol 5 – 1167pp, Vol 6 – 1308pp, Vol 7 – 1417pp, Vol 8 – 1438pp. All hardcovers in red cloth with gilt titles and details on spine in very good condition with firm spines despite the large text blocks, with minor shelf wear and varied corner and edge scuffing (o/t Vol 8 that has minor insect cloth damage too) and all in varied boldly coloured d/w’s in excellent condition, devoid of tears and even significant sun fading, all non price-clipped, now protected in clear archival coverings. Top edges red on all eight volumes with fading to Vols 1, 5, 7 and 8 top edges. Internal text, tables and all b/w photos remain in near excellent condition with no prior owner identifiers or markings or foxing/flecking (o/t Vol. 4 that has newspaper cuttings and reviews adhered to pre-title pages and ffep with edge tanning). The set of eight books is in at least very good to excellent condition over all, making them a wonderfully bright and attractive set . Not accompanied by the thirteen volume supplementary companion series however. The first two volumes are written by Churchill’s own son, Randolph S. Churchill who died in 1968, so the later volumes were then completed by Martin Gilbert, after having been previously approached by Randolph Churchil to do so, if it eventuated that he could not complete the series. It is the only official authorised biography of Churchill who did not want it published till after his own death. A big read but very important none the less and a vital possession of all serious Churchill students..
