This is the twelfth book of the world famous series and as a first edition paperback, it is over fifty years old. Schulz’s earliest presentations of the characters have now evolved even further from the second collection of 1954 and are nearly unrecognisable from the original book in 1952. More importantly though, Schulz is now constantly exploring the complex and almost taboo subjects of loneliness, depression and modern psychiatry (remember, it is the ’60’s). For as Charlie Brown longs for the attention of the “little red haired girl” it now behoves Lucy to become his albeit insensitive, psychiatrist (at 5c per visit!). Linus, Pig Pen, Schroeder, Peppermint Patty, Sally and of course the schizophrenic Snoopy and others have now joined the cast. Schulz’s comic strips are no longer cute vignettes of childhood but have now become quite extraordinary commentaries on the vicissitudes of life at all levels and his humour has evolved even further with his now very expressive cartooning. Extremely rare in Australia.
