Children of the Backlanes: Destitute and Neglected Children in Colonial New South Wales
The author both annotates the parlous state of abandoned children in the new colony as well as the history of the 'child-saving movement' with various schemes in place causing many controversies surrounding the ideological goals and the methods of each scheme. In 1788 , 36 of the passengers were children with many abandoned on arrival in the colony and by 1806 there were 1832 children in the colony and 1023 were illegitimate. A sombre but scholarly treatise that is an important feature of early colonial years. A scarce book.
