Fauves

Freeman, Judi
1995 (First Edition in Australia). The Art Gallery of New South Wales , Sydney, Australia

The French word "fauve" literary means "wild beast" a term which has come to mean, 'paintings of strong colour'. In particular, a phase which dominated the years from around 1904 to 1908; adhered mostly to the French artist, Henri Matisse. The inflected non-naturalistic colours were not welcomed by many critics of the day. Freeman explains why this was so, in such articular language, that the reader will be enthralled to explore continually her explanations of such vivid works.
