Jessie Street: A Rewarding but Unrewarded Life
Jessie Street was an Australian reformer of great political stature and importance. Born to the 'landed gentry' and then being married to the Chief Justice and Lieutenant Governor of New South Wales who employed his own servants, she completed Sydney University to then travel to Britain and become actively involved in the suffragette movement. she was a true feminist from early life and during the Depression and after a 1938 visit to the Soviet Union she converted to socialism, becoming a leader in the Australian peace movement and a long term friend of Russia. Numerous achievements were highlighted by the 1967 Aboriginal Referendum and her work on the UN's Status of Women Commission. A true Labour patriot dying at the age of 81 in 1970.
