Letters of Maria Edgeworth and Anna Letitia Barbauld

Scott, Walter Sidney
1953 (First Edition). The Golden Cockerel Press , London, England

This edition was limited to 300 copies (this is number 251) printed in Carlson's Old Face type on Arnold's mould-made paper. The selection of the letters used in this book are taken from some of the papers left by the late Rt.Hon Stephen Lushington, Judge of the High Court of Admiralty. Owing in part to the high cost of postage at the time and the scarcity of other methods of detailing and receiving news, it was quite common to retain letters that one would receive from friends. The letters printed here were written by two of the best-known women-writers in the early 1800's and are an insight into a rarified intellectual existence of the upper class in England some two hundred years ago. Obviously this is a very scarce edition.
