Lolita
Said to be the most famous and controversial novel from arguably one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century, to many it is over rated and blandly boring but to avid readers and experts it is an amazing work of literature, being a "shocking masterpiece"suffused with a savage humour and rich elaborate verbal textures Written originally in English, his third language. The original First Edition is in two large green paperback volumes from a French publisher (Olympia Press) being the only one originally willing to risk publication of this banned book about the obsession and victimization of a twelve year old girl by an aging French literature professor. A copy recently sold at auction in London for over 4,000 pounds. This English edition also remains scarce in all countries. Still receiving critical acclaim despite its perverse subject matter and is in many lists of the 100 best novels of the last century.
