Yet further involvement with Shute's past history in aircraft manufacture (the developed hydraulic retractable landing gear) with the central character flying a Wellington bomber regularly into a WWII Germany and falling in love but then struggling to survive his last few missions against enormous odds. Classic exciting Shute writing! Previously on sale for 55 pounds in England, so fairly uncommon.

Condition Report
| Cover | Hardcover in publisher's bottle green cloth with title in gold original and unfaded and very sound spine though with scuffing and bumping to corners and spine ends with a slight but tolerable forward lean, but with no dust wrapper and upper edge red colouring has totally faded but is now protected by removable clear archival covering only. |
| Overall | Some toning exists in the front and rear pages but the fawn endpapers are clean with no notations and there is no foxing original internal damage throughout. |
