Rosalie Gascoigne AM (1917 -1999) 'was a New Zealand-born Australian sculptor and assemblage artist. She was the first female artist to represent Australia at the Venice Biennale in 1982. She was appointed Member of the Order of Australia in 1994 for services to art, particularly sculpture.'[Wiki] She started making natural assemblages firstly with a rigorous form of Ikebana, then she turned to scavenging items found in harsh Australian environments using them in works such as small scrap iron sculptures then wooden boxed assemblages. She famously said that art-making materials 'need to have been open to the weather' She is regarded as one of Australia's most important artists.
