Silent Spring
Addressing a WWF dinner, the late Duke of Edinburgh said "I strongly recommend Rachel Carson's Silent Spring if you want to see what's going on". With an introduction by the late Lord Ernest Shackleton and a preface by Sir Julian Huxley, this so very famous book is of course one of the earliest environmental science books ever written and arguably the most famous, sparking a government investigation into the widespread use of pesticides and leading to a total ban on DDT in the US and many other countries. Indeed it is said to be one of the most influential books of the twentieth century (Time Magazine), alerting the public to urgent damage happening to the environment and all life on earth, despite aggressive attempts to ban the book by the chemical industry. It also contains an amazing 47 page detailed list of all principal sources as well. Not as valuable as the green clothed US First Edition, it is nevertheless worthy of a prominent place in all intelligent book collections..
