Sir Henry Parkes: The Australian Colossus
This is a truly compelling biography about Parkes (1815 - 1896), who was 'five-time Premier of New South wales, married three times, a fiscally prudent politician who nonetheless went bankrupt on three occasions, and was not only the father of federation but of seventeen children. He was an established poet, social and education reformer, pioneer of nursing and mental health care in Australia and a leading proponent of women's right to vote'. He was also a newspaper owner and editor of an important rival to the Sydney Morning Herald for many years. He was knighted in 1877 and this scholarly but highly readable volume provides an exhaustive history of the man. There are multiple fascinating black and white photographs clustered mid book too.
