Suzanne Goes To Brittany

Matchett, Grace
1954. George Harrap and Co. Ltd , London, England

A delightfully charming slim volume with exquisite wash water colours by the famous artist and art critic Geoffrey Scowcroft Fletcher who worked extensively as a draughtsman in pen , ink and wash over the second half of the 20th century. The other quaint feature of this book is that the text is in English with the French translations on the opposite pages. A product of its time, there are phrases that stand out such as the now inappropriate assessment of Suzanne's suntan:-"tu es comme une negresse" dit Pierre translated from "you look like a nigger, Suzanne" says Pierre.
