The Culture of Organs
1938 (First edition).
Hamish Hamilton Medical Books
, London, England
The purpose of this book is chiefly to describe the technique of the cultivation of whole organs in the Lindbergh pump . rendered possible by finance from the famous J.D. Rockefeller. A fascinating history in detail about the somewhat ghoulish attempts at harvesting and storing body parts for "biological research" by perfusing them in vitro in the late 1930's . There's not a lot written on this strange subject and is made further interesting with the pump being devised by the world famous aviator, Charles Lindbergh. Hence it remains an extremely scarce book never reprinted for obvious reasons.
