The Elf on the Shelf - A Christmas Tradition

Aebersold, Carol V. and Bell, Chanda
2005. The LumiStella Company , Atlanta, Georgia, USA

The purpose of this book is to encourage the connection children have with Santa Claus. This charming tradition is explained on the front endpaper, whereby a family "adopts" an imaginary elf that moves to different positions in the house every day, creating a race to find him each morning. The elf's purpose is to report to Santa about who is being "naughty or nice" leading up to Christmas. This is a very pretty, if somewhat dystopian, American production written by a mother and daughter team. While it remains a sweet children's book on the surface, it would make a very interesting case study for senior sociology students.
