The Entertaining History of Dick Whittington, And Wonderful Adventures of His Cat
This 200 year old children's chapbook is illustrated by woodcuts with a vignette on the front cover, full page illustration on the rear cover and smaller illustrations throughout. The publisher was known for cleverly adapting children's stories and poems. The town of Banbury was noted for producing toy books and printed matter for juvenile readers. A list of titles published is printed on the insides of the front cover. Chapbooks were printed for the poor or "less well to do" and sold for a penny as stated on the front cover. How these examples survived to the present day is a mystery as they were not made for longevity but are a wonderful and fragile example of very early children's literature and entertainment.
