The New House That Jack Built
This 200 year old chapbook is illustrated by woodcuts with a vignette on the front cover, full page illustration on the rear cover and smaller illustrations throughout. The publisher was known for cleverly adapting children's stories and poems. The town of Banbury was noted for producing toy books and printed matter for juvenile readers. A list of titles is printed on the inside of the cover. These children's chapbooks were printed for the poor and sold for a penny as stated on the front cover. Hand Cut and stitched they should not have survived more than a year or two yet here they appear in the twenty first century, a fragile reminiscence of the earliest English literature for older children.
