The Peacock Pride and Prejudice

Austen, Jane
1895. George Allen , London, England

Arguably the most famous but certainly the most attractive edition ever of Austen's beautiful novel. Enhanced by Thomson's 160 exquisite line drawn illustrations, all the various early reprints are as beautiful as the first production with the classic gilt peacock occupying the front board. The love story of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy needs no explanation or retelling but these editions remain the most sought after accessible copies of Pride and Prejudice anywhere in the world. Certainly once seen , it is difficult to not fall in love with this iconic edition that would grace any book collection..

Condition Report

Cover Excellent Condition - The famous gilt peacock illustrated front board is still very bright and unmarked with a similarly gilt decorated sound spine that does have very minor rubbing at both ends with slight bumping of all four corners as well. Overall it is an excellent cover that is largely responsible for this edition's fame. - No Dust Wrapper as issued
Overall Excellent Condition - Internally it is near faultless with trivial foxing spots to the front and rear few pages only and with a very neat prior owner name in ink to front free endpaper from Xmas 1898. All edges are in still bright gilt and there are no loose or damaged pages though there is the very tiniest of forward leans present. Thomson's illustrations with the frontis also remain in an unblemished state throughout.
