The South Pole - An Account Of the Norwegian Antarctic Expedition in the "Fram", 1910-1912. Two Volumes

Amundsen, Roald
John Murray Publishing , London, England

This book of two volumes (first English Edition) remains one of greatest and most important works on polar exploration, being Amundsen's modest and factual recording of the race to be the first man to reach the South Pole in December 1911. His rival Capt. Robert F. Scott not only failed to reach the Pole first, but - due to inexperience and dubious preparation - died with the rest of his party on their return trip. There are 100 plates, 5 maps (3 folding) and 16 text figures plus portrait frontispieces with tissue guards and the translation from Norwegian was done by A. G. Chater. This English edition includes ten additional photo illustrations not used in the original Norwegian version. These are tasteful and expert modern rebinds of a truly wonderful and heroic drama of exploration and both volumes are to be sold together.
