The Auckland Vehicular ferries run by fine seamanship Ferry Masters who had to handle tidal sets, weather, seagoing traffic and fog. Administered by a Harbour Board elected by local franchise successful business men who believed in civic duty. From the first Auckland ferries, problems and solutions abounded, until the Auckland Harbour bridge was built. The ferry industry would close and many lost their lifetime jobs but the bridge was to be a hit, saving time for the southern population. Letter from the author to Graeme Andrews loosely inserted.
