From the famous A & C Black 20/- Colour Book series printed from 1901 to 1921 in competition with the more utilitarian Baedecker's of the time, this has the most beautiful and sumptuous paintings done by Archibald Stevenson Forest (who painted several other ACB books) and in this case anyway, has concentrated on images of the people both native and white colonialists largely of the island of Jamaica. The dedication to Sir Alfred Jones by the author is in itself instructional as the praises this "strong upholder of all the best traditions of Imperialism". Somewhat different to the more travel orientated other books of the 20/- series but possibly more valuable for this detailed description of West Indian life.

| Cover | Hardcover in light blue boards with no dust wrapper, in very good condition with yellow and guilt embossed motifs original and excellent front board and a light tanned spine with standard shelf wear; t.e.g. with light flecking of other edges and surprisingly is structurally totally sound with no sign of any hinge weaknesses. |
| Overall | Text is likewise in very good condition with all 74 of the colour plates and annotated tissue-guards in excellent shape, untouched by any of the foxing afflicting the end-papers, with a gift inscription to the first owner and a prior collector's name from 1935 on the front free end paper. |
