Wroitten on Bamboo and Silk

Tsien, Tsuen-Hsuin
1969. University of Chicago Press Ltd. , Chicago, United States

Written about the beginnings of Chinese books and inscriptions as part of the Chicago University Studies in Library Science. This scholarly work takes us through the restoration of ancient works with chapters on records on bones and shells, metals and clay, stone and jade, before the evolution to bamboo, wood and then silk as precursors to quasi-paper and paper manuscripts. The book title refers to an old Chinese expression for all books, documents, or other written records produced in ancient times—really from antiquity to about the sixth century AD when bamboo and silk were the major writing materials in China.
