A Town Like Alice

Shute, Nevil
1950 (First Edition, first impression). Heinemann , London, England

Apparently this is Shute's best known novel and is the basis for the 1956 film of the same name with Virginia McKenna and Peter Finch. A wonderful romance novel set in London, Japanese occupied Malaya and of course Australia.

Condition Report

Cover Hardcover in original crimson publisher's cloth with the title and a capital S impressed into front board and title in gold original a very sound spine that has bumped extremities with a minute 2mm pink stain to the spine tail, all other corners being lightly bumped as well. the famous original non price-clipped dust wrapper is moderately chipped and worn with a small loss original one corner and the spine tail with a tear and loss of a segment original rear bottom edge that does not cross the rear panel printing. front flap includes the words book Society Choice' apparently indicating the simultaneous publication by Heinemann and the book Society in June 1950 now protected with removable clear archival covering too.
Overall Certainly there is some obvious toning at both front and rear of this volume however it is devoid of any foxing, prior owner notations original edge flecking (but the red top edge is now faded pink).Overall it is in very good original better condition and becoming increasingly scarce. Often said to be a later issue dust wrapper but generally accepted as a simultaneous publication as above.
