De Profundis

Wilde, Oscar
1949. Methuen and Co. Ltd , London, England

Edited by Vyvyan Holland, this is the complete text of Wilde's last prose work in English. Originally published in 1905, it was at the time composed of extracts from a much longer work cast in the form of a letter to a particular Lord, written on blue prison paper and taken with Wilde to France on release from gaol in 1897. The publication of this letter was prevented during the lifetime of the Lord in question. Felt to be a Wilde masterpiece, it is said to be of outstanding literary interest and importance.

Condition Report

Cover Very Good Condition - Boards are covered in fine blue cloth with a gold embossing on the front board and the title is on a firm spine. The boards have very light mottling on both front and rear that is a form of trivial foxing. The intact wrapper in fawn / grey with full titles on the front cover is chipped on all edges and the spine has a tiny area of loss on the tail . There is significant brown toning on the spine and rear cover however, though it is now protected in clear archival covering.- With Dust Wrapper
Overall Very Good Condition - Internally, normal page yellowing is the only significant detracter with clean sharp pages devoid of notations but the endpapers have discolouration and marking as well and the front pastedown has the tiny label from an Adelaide bookseller.
