In May 1926, a small airship, the 'Norge' under the command of a great Italian aeronaut, Umberto Nobile, flew from Rome to the North Pole and from there across an unknown region to Alaska thereby discovering and crossing the North Polar Sea to Alaska. Know in polar expedition history as the "Amundsen - Ellsworth - Nobile Transpolar Flight." Then a further two years later in May 1928, the again reached the Pole a second time in a bigger airship , the 'Italia' and after being battered by a fierce storm for thirty hours, crashed on the pack- ice thereby beginning a huge adventure to rescue the crew. Nobile has written this book himself, producing a moving record of the daring and heroism of the first trip on 'Norge' and then the thrilling drama of 'Italia'. A great read that enthralls any person who enjoys true adventure.

| Cover | Hardcover in light blue cloth with title in silver original the sound spine. minor corner bruising , small white marks original upper front board and slight edge scuffing are the only detractors from the cover that has a stylistic illustrated non-clipped dust wrapper with a little chipping of all edges and bottom spine edge carefully repaired with tape original the verse. |
| Overall | 25 black and white photo illustrations on double sided glossy plates are all present and undamaged throughout the book as is the text unmarked with no foxing original damage and no margin cracking. there is a neat printed bookplate and the prior owner's neat signature and date on the front free end paper with a small US bookstore sticker on the pastedown that does not detract from the otherwise overall very clean book. |
