Noddy Meets Father Christmas - NEW EDITION
In 1983 the reprint of this title was still adorned by "Golly" (one of Blyton's slightly contentious characters as a black 'gollywog'). The character in blackface with curly hair is seen in that edition on both the front and rear endpapers as well as the rear board and in other illustrations. At the time nobody, and certainly not the target audience, seemed too perturbed by Golly. However political and racial correctness then came to the fore and Golly disappeared forever being replaced by a cherubic white man on the endpapers and by a judiciously placed bar-code on the rear board in 1992. Originally published in 1955, this copy is a 1993 reprint of the 'new edition'. Could potentially be construed as early child literature censorship.
