The Battle Of Matapan

1961. B.T.Batsford Ltd. , London, England

The Battle of Matapan was fought on 28th and 29th March 1941, between the British and Italian Fleets, in the seas to the south and west of Crete in the Mediterranean Sea, the main action taking place during the night of the 28th about 100 miles off Cape Matapan in Greece at a time when Britain stood virtually alone, with the fall of France and Italy joining Germany in an alliance. . The battle was important for several reasons, including the use of radar-equipped ships being used at night to track the enemy and it was the first time that carrier borne aircraft played an indespensible role in a main fleet action. The British Fleet was much older and slower but they had the only aircraft carrier in the battle.
