The Ginger Man

Donleavy, J.P
1956(First Hardcover and First UK edition and First printing). Neville Spearman , London, England

A controversial book, suffering early on from accusations of obscenity and hence was banned in both Ireland and the USA thus necessitating publication originally by the slightly infamous Parisian Olympia Press around the same time as Nabokov's Lolita in soft cover two volumes . Thus it was issued in the Traveller's Companion Series also in soft cover, with other works widely considered pornographic and hence Donleavy was enraged, embarking on a twenty year legal battle with Olympia Press. This is a very scarce example of a famous work of Irish literature.

Condition Report

Cover Hardcover in publisher's baby blue cloth in excellent slightly shelf worn condition though with flecking and foxing original all edges plus the first printed edition original pictorial dust wrapper with a black and orange illustration of a lounging male with orange title lettering. the non price-clipped dust wrapper is certainly complete but is well worn with obvious multi-site chipping and some soiling original the rear and fore-edge too though is now possessing a dust wrapper backing paper and and unattached clear prior owner plastic cover.
Overall Apart from the edge flecking, the text is in excellent condition with no damage original foxing original extraneous markings even on the endpapers with no spine cracking original loose pages. the book is thus in very good condition overall though it had to be slightly expurgated by Donleavy for UK publication standards.
